Dear DrmDestryr,
In the beginning, laning is pretty important, but what should I focus on – heroes or creeps?
-TruffleSniffer
Dear TruffleSniffer,
Definitely an important question to ask for at least the first 6 levels… maybe even 10. Since each game is completely different, the question itself truly lacks a specific answer. There are certainly good tactics to follow in the beginning, but even the best fall short when you’re having to stop a five man push happening in the first two minutes.
Ranged – Jaina, Valla, Azmodan, etc. These guys can do damage from, well, far away. Because of this, you’re freer to choose. The one word of advice you should always heed is that you should always be sniping something no matter what the flow of the game is like. You do too much damage to not. If enemies are timid, focus on the creeps. If enemies are pushing, give ‘em hell. No matter what, there should never be a moment you are not damaging something.
Melee – Muradin, Stitches, Chen, Illidan, etc. The choice for you is a bit trickier. While tanks can head directly into the fray with relatively little fear, assassins have to be a bit lighter on their feet to avoid an untimely death. For you, be patient. You can’t always take down their creeps (especially when the heroes in your lane are very offensive) but you can hold them back. Play dumb. If you keep cool, there is a big chance your opponents will get cocky and get just a little too close to your towers and your attacks.

Dear DrmDestryr
Happy 2015! Can you tell at the start of a game if you’ll need to stick together as a team or not?
-OuiOui23
Dear OuiOui23,
A very happy New Year to you too! May your resolutions be well defined and achievable!
It can be safely said that as soon as objectives show up, it’s time to group as a team and rarely split from that moment forward. This, however, doesn’t exactly answer your question. As far as the start of the game is concerned, ‘tab’ is your best friend. Why? One word: stealth.
If the enemy has even one stealth hero, you should immediately pick an accountabilibuddy and never let them go. If you do decide to head out alone, make sure you are at least at max health. Those stealthers could be anywhere and absolutely adore ganking the unknowing. Even tanks are susceptible to mass damage. So long as you are in a pair, there is at least one other person there who can lay the smack down when the time calls for it.
